In December 2025, the Division of Aging Biology, National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in collaboration with staff from other NIA divisions, NIH institutes and the Veterans Health Administration, convened a workshop to explore the mechanistic bases and health effects of sex differences across tissues and ages. Novel research discoveries, technologies and visions to advance sex-differences research were discussed. The workshop aimed to bring together experts from various fields to share their knowledge and experiences on sex differences in aging, with a focus on understanding the underlying biological mechanisms that contribute to these differences. The discussion covered topics such as hormonal influences, epigenetic changes, and tissue-specific responses to aging. The workshop also highlighted the importance of considering sex differences in study design, data analysis, and interpretation of results. By advancing our understanding of sex differences in health across the lifespan, researchers hope to develop more effective strategies for preventing and treating age-related diseases. However, it is essential to note that these findings are intended for research use only (RUO) and should not be used for clinical applications without further validation.
