Association between handgrip strength and visceral obesity with low appendicular skeletal muscle mass in Chine

The data used in this study were obtained from individuals who attended the health checkup program at the health management center of Yancheng First People’s Hospital from March 2023 to November 2024. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for visceral obesity, low ASM, and their co-occurrence were calculated using a logistic regression model with the lowest HGS group serving as the reference category. Subjects in the highest quartile of HGS were significantly associated with a lower risk of visceral obesity. After adjusting for BMI, age, sex, and other covariates, the researchers found that individuals with higher HGS had a lower risk of low ASM. The study also explored the co-occurrence of visceral obesity and low ASM in the Chinese population.

Results showed that subjects in the highest quartile of HGS had a significantly lower risk of visceral obesity compared to those in the lowest quartile. The odds ratio for visceral obesity was 0.14 (95% CI: 0.08-0.27, p < 0.001). Similarly, individuals with higher HGS had a lower risk of low ASM. The study suggests that handgrip strength may be an important indicator of overall health in the Chinese population.

The study's findings have implications for the understanding of the relationship between handgrip strength and health outcomes in Chinese adults. Further research is needed to confirm these results and explore the underlying mechanisms.
