As a Greek man originating from the island of Crete, alcohol is something that runs deep in my cultural heritage. However, this paper focuses on the findings of a massive UK Biobank analysis of over 300,000 people. Research using nonlinear Mendelian randomization found that the cardioprotective effects of light alcohol seem to disappear after adjusting for lifestyle factors, including smoking, BMI, activity, vegetable intake, red meat intake, and self-reported health. This analysis showed that all amounts of alcohol consumption were associated with increased cardiovascular risk, with minor increases at low intake levels and exponential increases at higher intake levels. The study also found that genetic data showed that alcohol intake increased blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and gamma-glutamyl transferase, a marker of alcohol-related liver stress, in a dose-dependent, nonlinear fashion. Similar results were observed in studies examining the effects of alcohol on lifting performance and adaptations. High alcohol doses were found to reduce strength 24-60 hours after training, while lower doses showed no clear effect on strength or power output. However, alcohol appeared to significantly reduce mTORC1 phosphorylation, which is responsible for initiating muscle protein synthesis. Overall, the findings suggest that alcohol appears to provide zero cardiovascular protection, with increased risks starting at low intake levels and becoming worse with higher intakes. While occasional light post-training drinking is unlikely to have a significant impact on recovery and anabolic signaling, heavier drinking can have a negative impact on these processes. The results highlight the importance of considering lifestyle factors and individual variability when evaluating the effects of alcohol consumption on health and athletic performance.
