High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and apple juice contain high unpaired fructose levels, exceeding pediatric malabsorption dosages. This study investigates whether these dietary sources are associated with incident asthma in children, a concern given the link between metabolic factors and respiratory health.
Researchers utilized nationally representative data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study Birth Cohort (2001), covering children aged birth to five years. Cox proportional hazards models were employed to assess intake associations with asthma outcomes, including emergency room visits and hospitalizations.
The analysis revealed significant dose–response relationships between HFCS and 100% juice consumption and increased asthma risk. Incidence rates and case counts per 1000 children rose with higher intake frequencies, even at moderate levels of three times per week. Risk percentages for ER visits and hospitalizations ranged from 15% to 43%.
These findings are consistent with existing epidemiological studies linking HFCS and apple juice to asthma. Additionally, murine research and human trials suggest unpaired fructose contributes to gut dysbiosis, which may trigger childhood asthma through immunogen formation and GLP-1/GIP dysregulation.
The authors note that while these associations are significant, further controlled trials of unpaired fructose and the gut-lung axis are needed. FDA safety reviews regarding unpaired fructose in food and beverages remain relevant to ongoing research into metabolic and respiratory health.
