Is training on back-to-back days bad?
A broader theme in exercise science supports that recovery does not happen on a fixed 24- or 48-hour timer.
Recovery in exercise science is a complex process. It is not clear-cut and can be influenced by various factors. Research suggests that recovery is largely dependent on the dose of training stress applied, with more emphasis on training volume and proximity-to-failure for a given muscle. This concept challenges the traditional 24- or 48-hour recovery timeline. In fact, three separate studies have compared different training distributions, and muscle growth and strength gains were comparable. Even when participants trained the same muscle groups on back-to-back days, hypertrophy and performance improvements were unaffected. Another study found that participants completed two 5-day blocks of training with minimal recovery time between sessions, yet still made robust gains in muscle size and strength. This evidence supports the idea that total workload matters more than timing or distribution. In practical terms, rest days can be structured strategically, with placement after highest volume and/or closest-to-failure workouts for a given muscle. However, it is essential to note that overthinking recovery timing can be unnecessary. If total volume and effort are managed sensibly, training on back-to-back days is likely not a problem. The key is to optimize recovery by managing the overall workload and not overemphasizing recovery timing.
