Osteoporosis weakens bones, increasing fractures and decreased quality of life in the aging population. The parathyroid hormone (PTH)-derived peptide, teriparatide, promotes bone growth but also has bone-resorbing effects. A novel PTH-inducible target gene, Gprc5a, has been identified which suppresses osteoblast proliferation and differentiation, potentially serving as a therapeutic target for osteoporosis treatment.
