GHK-Cu and skin claims: what the evidence supports

A social media clip making the rounds suggests that GHK-Cu, a copper-binding peptide, can visibly reverse skin aging, erase wrinkles, and restore elasticity within weeks. The video implies that topical application is a proven anti-aging solution, backed by decades of research.
What the research neighborhood actually covers
GHK-Cu is one of the most studied peptides in dermatology. Early in vitro and animal studies, as well as some human trials, indicate that it can stimulate collagen production, support wound healing, and exhibit antioxidant properties. For example, a 2002 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reported improvements in skin elasticity and firmness with a topical GHK-Cu cream. However, these effects are modest and context-dependent, and the peptide's mechanism is not fully understood.
Limits of the evidence
Most studies are small, short-term, or industry-funded. There is no large-scale, long-term clinical trial proving that GHK-Cu reverses aging. The peptide's stability in formulations is a challenge, and penetration into deeper skin layers is limited. Moreover, the clip's claim of "erasing wrinkles" is an overstatement; at best, research suggests a reduction in fine lines and improved texture, not a reversal of chronological aging.
Research-use caveat
For researchers, GHK-Cu remains a valuable tool for studying skin biology and wound healing. But for consumers, the peptide is not a proven anti-aging miracle. Any use of GHK-Cu in research should follow established protocols, and claims about cosmetic benefits should be tempered by the current evidence.
