A recent TikTok video by Tommy Martin M.D. warns that most marketed peptides are not FDA-approved and that “research peptide” is a legal label, not a safety guarantee. The clip urges caution about animal data, anecdotes, and quality control. While the general caution is reasonable, the blanket dismissal may overlook peptides with a more established research footprint—such as GHK-Cu, which has been studied for decades in wound healing and skin remodeling.
What the clip claims
The video asserts that peptides are largely unproven, that human data is thin, and that users become “the clinical trial.” It also highlights risks of contamination and sports sanctions. These points are broadly accurate for many “research use only” peptides, especially those sold online without rigorous oversight.
What the research neighborhood actually covers
GHK-Cu (copper tripeptide-1) is one of the better-studied peptides. Peer-reviewed research, including human trials, has examined its role in skin regeneration, collagen production, and wound healing. For example, studies have shown that GHK-Cu can improve skin elasticity and reduce fine lines in topical formulations. However, most of this evidence comes from topical application, not injectable use. The peptide’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are also documented in cell and animal models, but long-term human safety data for systemic use remains limited.
Limits of the evidence
Even for GHK-Cu, the evidence is not universal. Many studies are small, industry-funded, or focused on cosmetic endpoints. The leap from “works in a petri dish” to “inject it for systemic benefits” is not supported by robust clinical trials. The FDA has not approved GHK-Cu as a drug, and most products are sold as research chemicals or cosmetics. Quality control is a real concern: purity and sterility are not guaranteed, and contamination risks exist.
Research-use caveat
For researchers, GHK-Cu is a legitimate tool for studying skin biology and potential therapeutic applications. But for individuals considering self-administration, the lack of regulatory oversight and long-term safety data is a significant red flag. The clip’s advice to prioritize sleep, nutrition, and training is sound, but it doesn’t negate the fact that some peptides have a stronger evidence base than others.
